Why use waist-to-height instead of BMI?

Waist size reflects where fat is stored, especially around the abdomen, which research links more closely to cardiometabolic health than total weight. Dividing by height makes it fair across tall and short people, and it isn't fooled by muscle the way BMI can be.

What is a healthy waist-to-height ratio?

A common guideline is a ratio below 0.5 — a waist less than half your height. Values from 0.5 to 0.59 are often described as increased, and 0.6 or higher as high. These cut-offs are population-level screening guides, not personal thresholds.

How do I measure my waist correctly?

Stand relaxed, find the point midway between your lowest rib and the top of your hip bone, wrap a tape measure around your bare skin, keep it level, and read it after breathing out normally. Don't pull the tape tight or hold your stomach in.
